The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology – BSSO (Sociedade Brasileira de Cirurgia Oncológica) is a non-profit organization founded on May 31, 1988, with the mission of uniting surgical oncologists and other healthcare professionals dedicated to the care of cancer patients in Brazil. In 2017, the Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology was officially recognized by the Associação Médica Brasileira (AMB), the Brazilian Medical Association, as the official institution representing the specialty of surgical oncology in Brazil. This recognition solidified BSSO’s role as the leading body in the field of surgical oncology within the country. It formalized the society’s authority in guiding the development, education, and practice of surgical oncology, ensuring a unified approach to the care of cancer patients through surgical interventions. The AMB’s acknowledgment also paved the way for SBCO to have a stronger voice in policy-making, clinical guidelines, and educational programs related to cancer treatment in Brazil. As the official representative, BSSO works closely with other national and international medical organizations, strengthening the specialty's visibility and advocating for advancements in both clinical and academic areas of surgical oncology.
