Cervical cancer is a preventable and curable disease, if detected early and adequately treated. Yet it remains one of the most common cancers and causes of cancer-related deaths in women across the globe, disproportionately affecting low- and middle-income countries.
In May 2018, the WHO Director-General announced a global call for action to eliminate cervical cancer and subsequently established his flagship Cervical Cancer Elimination Initiative to develop a global strategy for the elimination of cervical cancer.
In August 2020 the World Health Assembly adopted the Global Strategy for cervical cancer elimination. This course provides foundational knowledge on the strategies that countries should follow to reach and maintain the goal of an incidence rate of below 4 per 100 000 women via three key pillars and their corresponding targets: vaccination, screening and treatment.
