TNM Supplement

The 5th edition of the UICC TNM Supplement has been published.

Edited by Prof. Christian Wittekind (University Hospital, Leipzig, Germany), Prof. James Brierley (Princess Margaret Cancer Centre/University of Toronto, Canada) and Prof. Anne Lee (Hong Kong) and Dr Elisabeth van Eycken (Belgium Cancer Registry), the supplement extends and clarifies the UICC TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours, providing additional data on the principles and practice of cancer staging.

This fifth edition of the TNM Supplement: A Commentary of Uniform Use offers practitioners a wealth of material intended to complement the system’s day-to-day implementation. Alongside updated cancer staging definitions and revised chapters on neuroendocrine tumours and head, neck and lung carcinomas, the content includes new coverage of carcinomas of the thymus, sarcomas of the spine and pelvis, and soft tissue sarcomas of the head and neck. Additionally, it also provides answers to frequently asked questions from the UICC helpdesk.

Whether treated as a companion text to the recent eighth edition of the TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours or utilised as a standalone book, the TNM Supplement supports the correct and uniform application of the TNM classification and staging system and provides explanations and examples to resolve queries that arise during its daily use.

The UICC TNM staging system is the common language in which oncology health professionals can communicate on the cancer extent of individual patients. The staging system provides a basis for the individual prognosis and for decision making on treatment management. It can also be used, to inform and evaluate treatment guidelines, national cancer planning and research.
