Economics of Tobacco Control Research Initiative

UICC's partner Cancer Research UK is funding economic research to support tobacco control policy in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) thanks to a strategic 5 year collaboration with the International Development Research Centre  (IDRC)

What is the Economics of Tobacco Control Research Initiative?

This initiative aims to address the health and development challenges posed by tobacco use in LMICs. The applied nature of the research supported by this Initiative is intended to help inform and influence tobacco-control policy measures in the near and medium-term, and help countries leap forward and contribute to Sustainable Development Goal targets with respect to health and economic empowerment.

Funding available:

Applicants can apply for between CAD$300,000 – $1 million for 3 or 4 year grants.

Remit:

CRUK is looking for applications that address at least 1 of the following research themes:

  • Best practices in tobacco taxation
  • Economic impacts of tobacco use
  • Economic impact of tobacco control policies and programmes
  • Policy barriers to fiscal measures imposed by international or regional economic agreements
  • Health equity and differential economic impact of policies on low-income groups, women, indigenous people
  • Financing mechanisms for tobacco control and Non Communicable Disease prevention

Who can apply?

The call is open to researchers based in LMICs in the following regions: Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, Middle-East-and-North-Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
