COVID-19 and cervical cancer - A pandemic’s impact and a global response

In a blog published by the NCD Alliance, Julie Torode of UICC and Heather White of TogetHER call for fresh thinking to harness synergies between COVID-19 and cervical cancer elimination plans.

Amidst the global COVID-19 pandemic, cervical cancer took the lives of 342,000 women in 2020. Without decisive action, this figure will increase markedly over the coming years. The New Year offers the opportunity to celebrate the practitioners, policymakers, advocates and women who have sustained their commitment to ending this preventable disease.

Marking January as Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, Julie Torode, Director of Special Projects at UICC joins Heather White, Director of TogetHER, in calling on governments to align their national strategies with the 90:70:90 global targets and ambition outlined in the World Health Organization's Global Strategy to accelerate the elimination of cervical cancer as a public health problem.
