Virtual Dialogue: Addressing AMR for better cancer care - the importance of effective antimicrobial stewardship
People with cancer are more vulnerable to infections due to weakened immune systems, with up to one in five hospitalised for infections during treatment. Drug-resistant pathogens threaten cancer care, making urgent action on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) essential to protect progress in treatment.
Held on the occasion of the London Global Cancer Week, an annual event that brings together all the relevant stakeholders and experts in the field, this Virtual Dialogue aimed to emphasise the crucial role of effective antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in promoting the responsible use of medications to manage infections, ultimately contributing to improved outcomes in cancer care.
The second UN high-level meeting on AMR took place on 26 September 2024, where the political declaration on addressing AMR was adopted by Members States. At this meeting, Member States committed to a set of actions to mitigate AMR across all sectors, using a One Health approach that recognises the interconnectedness between human, animal, agriculture and environmental health.
There are several commitments outlined under action on human health to effectively address AMR including focus on knowledge and awareness raising, ensuring access to appropriate therapies, and effective stewardship and infection prevention and control (IPC). Progress in these areas will have a positive impact on cancer care outcomes.
