World Cancer Leaders’ Summit 2023 gathers global health experts in Long Beach, California

Some 350 leaders of cancer organisations from around the world are convening on 16-17 October in Long Beach, CA to discuss a range of topical issues. The event will also feature the launch of the Latin American Code Against Cancer and the announcement of the UICC Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Control Awards.

UICCWorld Cancer Leaders' Summit 2023 is taking place in Long Beach, California on 16-17 October. Approximately 350 leaders and key decision-makers from 72 countries have registered to attend.

The event is co-hosted by the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Stand Up To Cancer. It is held in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Sessions

Key session topics will include the impact of climate change on cancer care and health systems ; disruptive technologies, such as artificial intelligence in cancer diagnosis and mRNA vaccines for treatment; antimicrobial resistance, which threatens to undermine the progress achieved in treating cancer; links between obesity and cancer, and how to address the growing obesity epidemic; and how to ensure the optimal delivery of cancer services in crisis situations.

Speakers

Confirmed speakers at the summit include a broad range of experts from government, UN agencies, research institutes, and corporations. Notable names are Rex Richardson, Mayor of Long Beach, H.E Dr Eng Seleshi Bekele, Ambassador of Ethiopia to the United States, and H. E. Jeannette Kagame, First Lady of Rwanda.

The Latin American Code Against Cancer

The International Agency for Cancer Research (IARC) and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), have also chosen the World Cancer Leaders’ Summit to launch their joint publication, the Latin American Code Against Cancer, which aims to offer unified and clear evidence-based messages to educate the population on cancer prevention and well as serve to guide and support governments in the implementation of their cancer control strategies.

UICC Awards

The World Cancer Leaders’ Summit will close with the presentation of the recipients of UICC’s Outstanding Contribution to Cancer Control Awards, given by former UICC President Princess Dina Mired of Jordan. The Awards ceremony will recognise one UICC member organisation and one individual from the civil society.
