The World Cancer Day 2023 Impact Report demonstrates the success of the campaign

Individuals and organisations across the globe joined with UICC, its members and partners and the entire cancer community to make the World Cancer Day “Close the care gap” campaign another resounding success in 2023.

As documented in the World Cancer Day 2023 Impact Report, the second year of the "Close The Care Gap" campaign continued to make significant strides in promoting greater equity in cancer control on 4 February 2023. Individuals and organisations around the world drove the momentum to see more equitable outcomes for everyone in terms of preventing and surviving cancer.

There was again a surge of enthusiasm on social media channels and in the media, with #WorldCancerDay trending globally on Twitter, and over 430,000 social media posts shared, including messages from influential figures, such as Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Queen Letizia of Spain, the British royal family, tennis star Rafael Nadal, football players Adnres Iniesta and Sebastian Haller, and actress Sofia Vergara and comedian Ricky Gervais. More than 95,000 campaign materials on closing the care gap were downloaded and over 25,000 press articles in 170 countries and territories helped generate discussions around equity in cancer control.

As part of World Cancer Day 2023, the "5k Challenge" was held to symbolically 'close the care gap' and raise awareness about cancer risks and disparities in outcomes. This event brought together people from all walks of life, with thousands around the globe showing their support for the cause and to help spread the message of hope and resilience in the face of cancer.

The 5k Challenge was just one of the many ways the campaign inspired action and encouraged collaboration between researchers, healthcare providers, community organisations and patient groups. The 4th of February saw thousands of activities in over 100 countries by research centres, hospitals, patient groups and other grassroots as well as civil society organisations, which connected communities and helped raise awareness about equity in cancer care. Many governments around the world chose this occasion to announce a higher priority and more investments for cancer control.
