UICC welcomes the Economist Group’s decision to cease its engagement with the tobacco industry

UICC looks forward to re-engaging with the Economist Group, following their move to end relationships with the tobacco industry and reaffirm their commitment to public health.

UICC commends the Board of The Economist Group for taking the decision to cease all relationships with the tobacco industry.

The decision is an acknowledgement of The Economist’s commitment to global public health and sustainability, and a recognition of the millions of people who lose their life to a tobacco-related cancer or other disease every year.

“We are very encouraged by this shift and look forward to renewing our collaboration with the Economist Group to reduce the incidence of cancer and other non-communicable diseases.”
Dr Cary Adams, CEO of UICC

Earlier this month, UICC had made the decision to withdraw from the World Cancer Series, organised by Economist Impact (a division of The Economist Group) upon learning of the ties with the tobacco industry.

UICC’s withdrawal from the World Cancer Series was based on its longstanding policy of not engaging with any entity involved in tobacco production or promotion, in alignment with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

UICC is pleased to confirm that, given the decision of The Economist Group Board, it will renew its support for the World Cancer Series and looks forward to re-engaging with this important initiative in due course.
