UICC is very saddened to learn about the passing of Prof. Harald zur Hausen

Prof. Harald zur Hausen, who discovered the human papilloma viruses causing cervical cancer, passed away on 28 May 2023 at the age of 87.

Prof. Harald zur Hausen made groundbreaking contributions to global cancer control and prevention. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine in 2008 for his discovery of human papilloma viruses causing cervical cancer.

As Chairman of the Board and Scientific Director, Prof. zur Hausen led the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ), a UICC member organisation, for twenty years, from 1983 until his retirement in 2003. Under his leadership, the DKFZ became one of the leading international research institutions. Today, millions of people benefit from Prof. zu Hausen's scientific work.

Prof. Harald zur Hausen passed away on 28 May at the age of 87. UICC extends deepest sympathies to his wife and his family.
