Leadership course for civil society organisations

Some 87 organisations from 54 countries have enrolled over 300 of their staff, volunteers and Board members to participate in a six-month training programme to strengthen their capacity on key leadership and management topics.

Hosted by UICC in collaboration with Stone Soup Consulting, a network of organisational consultants and management experts, the programme is part of UICC’s commitment to strengthen organisational leadership across its membership and addresses a specific need highlighted by civil society organisations in cancer control, particularly since the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Having a strong, effective and sustainable civil society sector is a cornerstone of a healthy cancer control ecosystem that delivers positive outcomes for the communities it serves. This programme, developed in response to specific requests from our membership, is a demonstration of UICC’s commitment to do what we can to resource and support our members, so they are able to maximise their impact and drive progress from the ground up.”

- Kirstie Graham, Director for Capacity Building, UICC

The programme has been developed to ensure regional relevance and accessibility, and will be delivered in English, French and Spanish. It includes a variety of expert-led webinars, discussion activities, practical assignments and live interactive sessions covering eight key areas: governance, planning, communications, fundraising, partnerships, measurement and evaluation, people and financial management.

“The focus on fundraising and financial sustainability is particularly important to us. Our organisation was adversely affected by the effects of COVID-19 and almost had to close. The learning from that is we need to seriously think about financial sustainability and diversification of sources of funding.”

- Emmah Kariuki, Program Manager, Women For Cancer Early Detection and Treatment (Kenya)

The training programme, delivered between November 2023 and April 2024, is made possible thanks to the generous support from MSD and Fondation Philanthropia.
