On May 13 in 1977, Liga Colombiana Contra el Cáncer, was started by the initiative of 33 people having individual experiences dealing with the problems that face cancer patients on a daily basis, especially those relating to their emotional equilibrium, the shortage of oncology medications in the city and the lack of treatment resources. Liga Colombiana Contra el Cáncer , is a private non-profit institution under the Liga Colombiana de Lucha contra el Cáncer, which began its work for the benefit of those diagnosed with cancer and specifically for those who do not have sufficient economic resources to receive adequate medical care and attention. The original objective of the the League was to develop a coordinated fighting action against cancer relating to investigation, education, prevention, disclosure, diagnostic and assistance. MEDICANCER began its work in supplying medications to oncology patients and progressively worked towards addressing other related needs. In 1962, On May 13 in 1977, Liga Colombiana Contra el Cáncer was accepted as a full UICC member.
