The Oncology Institute “Prof. Dr I. Chiricuta” Cluj-Napoca (IOCN), was founded in 1929 by Prof. Dr. Iuliu Moldovan under the name of "Institute for Cancer Prophylaxis and Treatment" and is one of the first medical centers in Europe, being also the first large research unit that took as its main objective "the study of cancer prophylaxis" at a time when the very notion of prophylaxis was vaguely defined.
IOCN provides preventive, curative and palliative medical services in the field of oncology, with more than 25,000 patients treated each year. The Institute focuses on extensive investigations in fundamental sciences and prevention, diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. The Institute coordinates basic, clinical, translational and population research. It is a source of innovation and it developed an integrated platform for research, patient care and teaching for the benefit of our patients, for their well-being and a better quality of life.
The Oncology Institute “Prof. Dr I. Chiricuta” Cluj-Napoca (IOCN), has played a central role in coordinating the implementation of Romania’s first National Cancer Control Plan, contributing its expertise in oncology research, prevention, and clinical management to support national cancer control efforts.
The National Competence Center in Cancer (CNCC), coordinated by the “Prof. Dr. Ion Chiricuță” Oncology Institute Cluj-Napoca (IOCN), is a national initiative funded through Romania’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). The project aims to strengthen cancer research, innovation, and clinical practice by creating a national network that integrates prevention, early diagnosis, precision medicine, and digital health solutions.
