GCRI, with a multi-disciplinary close relationship between cancer care, research and education, intends to provide the greatest hope to the patients and the general population whose needs they endeavour to cater to. GCRI believes that the world class cancer research, state of art therapeutic efforts and intensive and extensive educational efforts regarding prevention, detection, treatment and palliation in the field of cancer will improve the quality of life of all those who suffer from it. GCRI collaboration believes that with other cancer organisations, research laboratories and pharma-research establishments will bring a better tomorrow. GCRI is dedicated to a scientific attitude and humane approach to diagnosis and treatment of cancer, inquisitiveness, innovation and creativity in the field of research and its translation into day-to-day clinical applications, value oriented as well as information and skill-intensive educational programmes, respect to all schools of thoughts and endeavours for free exchange of ideas with due acknowledgments of contributions by each member of GCRI, simple, effective and targeted awareness programmes for prevention as well as early detection of cancer and anti-tobacco drive directed at the medical profession and population at large, and providing hope, sympathy and respect to all those who are terminally ill. GCRI is a Regional Cancer Centre recognized by Government of India and a Post-Graduate teaching centre affiliated to B.J. Medical College, Gujarat University. It is also recognized by Gujarat University for speciality courses like M.Ch (Oncology), D.M. (Oncology) and M.D. (Radiotherapy), and for Ph.D. studies. It also offers Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology certification every year. Today, GCRI is a 650 bedded comprehensive cancer centre with 22,684 new cancer and non cancer cases registered and 2,22,899 outdoor patients visited in the year 2008. To cater for patient care, the Institute has total strength of 940 employees in categories of Class I, II and III officers, Class III officers (nursing), class IV employees and 110 resident doctors. The various clinical departments include Surgical oncology, Medical oncology, Paediatric oncology, Gynec-oncology, Radiation oncology, Radiodiagnosis, Bone marrow transplantation, Anaesthesiology, Laboratory medicine, Community oncology & medical records, and Physco-oncology. Surgical oncology has superspeciality clinics in the form of Uro-oncology, Interventional therapy centre, Musculoskeletal services, Plastic & reconstructive services, Neuro-oncology services and Opthalmological services. The ancillary services for patient care include Nursing services, Physiotherapy, Stoma clinic, Speech therapy, Prosthesis and rehabilitation centre, Pharmacy and General administration. The Paediatric oncology centre undertakes treatment of leukaemia through a National Cancer Institute, USA Protocol Programme. A well established Clinical research wing undertakes several clinical trials for newer drugs and treatment modalities. Separate administrative arrangement in the form of Research and Education services, has helped the institute to organize its research and educational activities and hence a definitive perspective and direction is being provided in this aspect also. The principal areas include the Research Wing (Cancer Biology Department), Educational Activities, Library, and Educational graphics and medical photography. Within the research wing there is the Cell biology division, Molecular endocrinology division I, Molecular endocrinology division II, Receptor and growth factor laboratory, Biochemistry research division, Immunohistochemistry division, and Medicinal chemistry and pharmacogenomics. Community Oncology Centre, Vasna, houses several activities. Prominent among them are the Hospice care, Permanent cancer as well as tobacco-de-addiction related exhibition, Cancer related health check-up and Medicinal plantation. In 1975, GCRI became full UICC member.
