Cancer Prevention and Control research area at CEDES has established itself as a nationally and internationally prestigious research group in cancer prevention. Its work has been key to generating scientific evidence that has transformed public health policies and innovative strategies to improve access to healthcare.
Since 2007, it has driven innovative projects for the introduction of HPV testing and self-sampling for cervical cancer screening. Its interdisciplinary approach based on mixed-methods designs, which integrates social sciences, epidemiology, and implementation science, has consolidated CEDES as a benchmark in cancer prevention, with an impact on human resource training and international networks.
Throughout its trajectory, it has developed pioneering projects. Notable among them are the Demonstration Project for the Introduction of HPV Testing and the EMA Project, through which HPV testing was incorporated as a primary screening tool to prevent cervical cancer in Argentina, demonstrating that self-collection is effective in increasing screening coverage among vulnerable populations. These projects have not only shifted paradigms, but have also served as a reference for other countries in the region.
In recent years, responding to healthcare access challenges, the team has deepened its work in Implementation Science and e-Health, developing technological tools to improve cancer prevention. Key projects include the ATICA Project and the development of Tita App to provide information and support to women screened with HPV tests. Beyond its impact on public health policies, this line of work has established itself as a privileged space for human resource training in health and transdisciplinary work. It has also strengthened collaboration networks nationally and internationally by working with the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC/WHO), the Pan American Health Organization, WHO, NCI/NIH, Harvard University, among others
