UICC Technical Fellowship awardee killed in Gaza

UICC is extremely saddened by the death of Dr Ayah Firwana, UICC Technical Fellowship awardee, who was reported killed in Gaza on 15 October alongside 15 other family members.

Dr Firwana was a family doctor and worked for the Palestinian Ministry of Health. She was set to take part in a UICC Technical Fellowship, an initiative by which cancer professionals exchange knowledge, skills and techniques through one-month international visits.

“It is with a very heavy heart that we learn of the loss of Dr Ayah Firwana. Her commitment to advancing cancer care and treatment in challenging circumstances was commendable. Her death is a devastating loss for her loved ones, patients and the medical community. Our deepest condolences go out to everyone who knew Ayah.”

- Cary Adams, CEO, UICC

Dr Firwana planned to travel to the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan where she had participated in a previous training program. She wanted to improve smoking cessation services in Gaza and was working on a tobacco-dependence treatment program.

“We remember Dr Ayah as an ambitious, passionate and dedicated healthcare provider trying to thrive despite difficult circumstances. May her soul rest in peace.

- Asma Hatoqai, MSc, Pharm. King Hussein Cancer Center
