In December 2016, the new 8th edition of the TNM Classification of Malignant Tumours is being published. Edited by Prof. James Brierley, UICC past-president Prof. Mary Gospodarowicz (both Princess Margaret Cancer Centre/University of Toronto, Canada) and Prof. Christian Wittekind (University Hospital, Leipzig, Germany), it provides the latest, internationally agreed-upon standards to describe and categorise cancer stage.
The UICC TNM staging system is the common language in which oncology health professionals can communicate on the cancer extent for individual patients as a basis for decision making on treatment management and individual prognosis but can also be used, to inform and evaluate treatment guidelines, national cancer planning and research.
Arranged by anatomical region, this edition delivers updates in staging for cervical nodes, carcinomas of the oral cavity and nasopharynx, carcinomas of the thyreoid, oesophagus, stomach, anal canal, the lung and pleura, skin, ovary, prostate, penis and adrenal cortex as well as neuroendocrine tumours, and bone and soft tissue sarcoma.
To facilitate the collection of stage data for cancer surveillance in low- and middle-income countries there are new sections on Essential TNM in colon, breast and lung carcinomas and simplified Stage for Pediatric cancer.
