The World Cancer Leaders' Summit 2023 took place on 16-17 October, in Long Beach, CA, United States and was hosted by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), the American Cancer Society (ACS), the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), MD Anderson Cancer Center and Stand Up To Cancer.

The theme of the WCLS 2023 was "Cancer control in a changing world"

The Summit was held in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The event was open to CEOs of UICC full members, UICC partners and select leaders from the global health and cancer communities.

Founded in 1933 and based in Geneva, UICC has over 1150 member organisations in 172 countries and territories. The membership base includes the world’s major cancer leagues and societies, research institutes, treatment centres, hospitals, ministries of health, public health agencies and patient support groups. UICC’s mission is to both unite and support the cancer community in its efforts to reduce the global cancer burden, promote greater equity and ensure that cancer control remains a priority on the global health and development agenda.

The American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) is the world’s largest professional membership organisation for pathologists and laboratory professionals. In addition to their educational and certification missions around the world, they maintain a very active global health delivery program focused on laboratory strengthening in all aspects. Through their 10 year + work with PEPFAR, they have improved HIV-related testing and access in ~20 countries, trained more than 3000 individuals, and continue to deliver innovated diagnostics their partners. The Cancer Diagnostics and Treatment in Africa Initiative, created and led by ASCP, aims for 100% access to diagnostics for patients with cancer through on-site assessment, implementation planning, and, ultimately, connectivity to experts around the world through telepathology. With more than 100,000 members, the society’s influence has guided the application and evolution of the pathology and laboratory medicine specialty since 1922. ASCP is leading the way in global health pathology.

The mission of the American Association for Cancer Research is to prevent and cure cancer through: Research, Education, Communication, Collaboration, Science Policy and Advocacy, and Funding for Cancer Research.

Through its programs and services, the AACR fosters research in cancer and related biomedical science; accelerates the dissemination of new research findings among scientists and others dedicated to the conquest of cancer; promotes science education and training; and advances the understanding of cancer etiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment throughout the world.

The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 2.5 million volunteers saving lives in every community. As the largest voluntary health organization, the Society’s efforts have contributed to a 25 percent decline in the cancer death rate in the U.S. since 1991, driven by less smoking, better treatments, and earlier detection.
