CERN leverages its accelerator, detector and digital technologies to advance cancer treatments. It supported the Proton Ion Medical Machine Study and the Next Ion Medical Machine Study to design compact devices for proton and carbon-ion therapy, enabling precise dose delivery to tumours, including through novel gantry designs. The Laboratory also produces novel and rare medical radionuclides via its MEDICIS facility.  It develops machine learning algorithms to assist practitioners in identifying brain tumours and with improving breast-cancer screening protocols. CERN also contributes agent-based simulations to predict the evolution of cancer cells and continues to explore new approaches to improve cancer treatment.

Further, at CERN, safeguarding the health and wellbeing of its personnel is a top priority. The CERN Medical Service, established in 1965, leads this mission with a focus on occupational health, prevention and risk-based monitoring. Beyond routine health checks and the provision of general health care, it also runs regular thematic awareness campaigns, including multiple cancer prevention initiatives and provides support for staff living with cancer.
