Cancer Institute (W.I.A.) is a State Cancer Institute, an apex body for cancer in the state of Tamil Nadu, recognised by the governments of India and Tamil Nadu. The four facets of the institute are as follows:(a) Cancer diagnosis and treatment - Providing state-of-the-art cancer diagnosis and/or treatment (curative or palliative) to approximately 14,000 new patients every year,(b) Cancer professional education - Offering super-specialty courses in medical oncology/pathology (D.M.) and surgical oncology (M.Ch.); post-graduate courses in radiation oncology (M.D.); fellowships; and degree programmes (PhD, BSc, MSc, etc.) in a variety of disciplines (oncology, other allied sciences)(c) Cancer research - Conducting randomised clinical trials, as well as research in molecular oncology, biology, epidemiology and clinical studies.(d) Cancer prevention - Implementing community-based cancer screening programmes for common cancers, and operating a tobacco cessation clinic and control programmes.In addition, the Institute is a pioneer in cancer surveillance through cancer registries.
