UICC at AORTIC’s 12th International Conference of Cancer in Maputo, Mozambique

This cohort of Young Leaders includes a diverse group of individuals who have a shared goal of improving global cancer control.

The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) will be attending the AORTIC’s 12th International Conference of Cancer in Africa that will take place next 5-8 November 2019 in Maputo, Mozambique.

As part of the opening ceremony, UICC’s President, HRH Princess Dina Mired, will launch the publication: “Cancer control in Africa: Universal Health Coverage” that the UICC, the African Organisation for Research and Training (AORTIC) and the International Cancer Control Partnership (ICCP) have prepared. It provides an overview on the status of national cancer control planning in Africa with a view to include cancer in universal health coverage (UHC) plans across the region.

The publication which will be launched at AORTIC and available for download from uicc.org features information on the cancer burden in the region, data on national cancer control planning collected during the Global NCCP Review conducted in 2018, case studies on topics relevant to cancer control in Africa as well as partnerships, projects and initiatives that are setting the way forward for cancer control on the continent. The focus of each chapter is on the current status of specific aspects of cancer control in the region, challenges and gaps in each area as well as policy recommendations for improvement to achieve the ‘Health for All’ vision of Universal Health Coverage.

Jointly with the African Cancer Registry Network (AFCRN) and International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC) UICC will also be releasing volume III of Cancer in Sub-Saharan Africa. The publication presents statistics on cancer incidence from 31 cancer registries in 22 countries across Africa, eight of which are new, not appearing in Volume II. The publication will be freely available to download from uicc.org and afcrn.org

UICC Sessions

Julie Torode, Director of Special Projects at UICC, will also be presenting a session on UICC and WHO Cervical Cancer Initiative on Tuesday at 2:30 am at the Meeting Room 4. This session will give an opportunity to learn about the new global strategy which is due for adoption at the World Health Assembly in May 2020 and a chance to share ideas of how to build a strong civil society voice to drive national action across Africa and achieve the 2030 targets. Julie will also moderate a session on Human Rights and Cancer on Thursday at 8:30 am at the Meeting Room 1. This session will provide an opportunity to discuss how human rights-based advocacy can be used to achieve equity in cancer risk factor reduction, cancer prevention and control.

UICC Board Members Zainab Bagudu from Medicaid Cancer Foundation and Sally Cowal from American Cancer Society (ACS) will take part in several sessions and they will also be participating on UICC’s activities at the heart of the exhibition. For more information about sessions, here is the full online programme.

As part of UICC’s Programme of Activities at AORTIC there will be a number of informative sessions and “meet the expert” type of workshops, where conference delegates and UICC Members will have the opportunity to learn more about UICC, the areas of work, publications and future projects for the region.
