News 18 July 2019 UICC awards 10 members with Leadership Development Grants The Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) has selected ten representatives of member organisations to receive grants for leadership development. With the full support of UICC, each awardee will have the valuable opportunity to conduct a ten-day visit to a fellow cancer organisation as a way to further promote closer regional collaboration and impactful knowledge sharing. Header Paragraph In this round, grantees represent organisations in the Asia Pacific and in the Middle East & North Africa region, where UICC hosted two Leadership in Action meetings earlier this year. The reports for these meetings, held in Oman in April and Singapore in March, are now available online. Participants of these meetings were given the exclusive opportunity to apply for the grants. Applications were selected based on the relevance of the objectives, the anticipated impact as well as the identification of a suitable host. The awardees have been connected to a host organisation in the same region and visits are planned to take place before the end of the year. Knowledge and skill sharing will focus on critical areas, such as: Acquiring practical leadership insights Coordinating effective cancer control campaigns Implementing communication strategies Ensuring engagement of stakeholders Managing sustainable funding Following the visits, the awardees are expected to share their learnings and knowledge within their own networks to ensure that what is learned is spread. On a wider scale, the grant programme encourages stronger cooperation between the awardees and their hosts to reduce the cancer burden in the region. The Leadership Development Grant programme was first piloted in Latin America in 2017. The next group of recipients will be announced in August 2019 as a follow-up to the Leadership in Action meeting in Senegal for the Francophone Africa region. Members from Latin America will have a second opportunity to benefit from the programme following the upcoming Leadership in Action meeting in Mexico this October 2019.
