Not to be missed - Spotlight on activities this World Cancer Day

The countdown to World Cancer Day has begun and actitvities and events from around the world are starting to take shape for the big day on 4 February. 

With one month to go, we're shining a spotlight on a handful of activities to get you inspired, involved and to help you make World Cancer Day 2018 the biggest yet. 

1. World Cancer Day Gala hosted by Peter Andre, London, UK

Held in aid of Cancer Research UK and supporting World Cancer Day, Fazz PR and Events will be organising a stunning gala dinner hosted by singer-songwriter and TV personality, Peter Andre. The evening will be held in London, on the eve of World Cancer Day.

The gala dinner will include entertainment, a raffle and auction with funds going to Cancer Research UK.

2. One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk, Johannesburg, South Africa

The Breast Health Foundation (BHF) are hosting a 5km "One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk" at the JHB Zoo on 4 February 2018 to commemorate World Cancer Day.

One Step at a Time, is an initiative of the Breast Health Foundation and is symbolic of personal victory over diagnosis and treatment to survivorship, and stands as an example of what is possible. 

The inspiration for this event came from five breast cancer survivors who trekked to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) in 2016. As Everest represents the epitome of human conquest and achievement this was a public demonstration of the strength and determination of these brave warriors.

"The Breast Health Foundation, together with our partners, sponsors and fellow members of the Cancer Alliance, would like to use The One Step at a Time Cancer Warrior Walk hosted on World Cancer Day to advocate wellness for Cancer Warriors and advocate cancer as a priority disease globally. We hope to attract around 5000 attendees of to support this worthy cause."

3. Chain for Change, Winnipeg, Canada

Fancy breaking the ice and a Guinness World Record?

You can do exactly that with the Chain For Change who aim to form the longest line of ice skaters on the longest ice skating trail at The Forks, Winnipeg. The current Guinness World Record for the longest line of ice skaters is 370 skaters moving in an unbroken chain for 400 meters. On World Cancer Day, 4 February 2018, Chain for Change will attempt to break the current Guinness World Record on the world’s longest skating trail.

4. Ride to Conquer Cancer, Goa, India

Staff members from The King's School (TKS), Goa, India love adventure, the open road and most importantly, bringing a smile to peoples faces. To help raise awareness of World Cancer Day 2018, TKS will be riding their motorcycles through the streets of Goa and all are welcome to take part whether in the saddle or not!

 

 

"Ride to Conquer Cancer" will be held on 21st January, 2018, to support the welfare of cancer Patients in need.

5. Underwater Magical Awareness Campaign Against Cancer, Trivandrum, India

On 4 February, Yuva Krishna, an Illusionist from Trivandrum, India will perform an underwater stunt along with other tricks to raise awareness of cancer prevention and to help reduce the stigma around diagnosis.  

In addition, the campaign also aims to raise awareness in regards to leading a healthier lifestyle and coming together to help others around us to help stop cancer patients from feeling isolated.

"I feel educating people and especially the younger generation about the effects and consequences of cancer has such a big imapct and by doing so it helps to prevent and reduce the risks of cancer. By teaching through visual media it becomes more effective and with a sprinkle of magic this will help to penetrate much deeper into the minds of others.

World Cancer Day is a day to get everyone to connect at events such as this or somewhere else in the world to help come together in the fight against cancer and with the support of UICC I am certain that the impact of the event will be significantly greater."

6. World Cancer Day 2018 in Switzerland

 

The Swiss Cancer League is committed to promoting physical activity in order to prevent setbacks in those affected by cancer, as well as being dedicated to preventing illness and promoting good health in the general public.

For World Cancer Day 2018, the Swiss Cancer League will be mobilising more than 45 sports clubs and athletes in a variety of disciplines to get Switzerland moving: marathon, judo, beach volley, ice hockey, fencing, volleyball, martial arts, triathlon, Swiss wrestling, skiing, golf, curling, handball, mountain biking, as well as the Swiss Cancer League’s sports groups for those affected by cancer. A photo of athletes and sports clubs under the banner #supportthroughsport shall be posted with a message of encouragement to participate in sports on the Swiss Cancer League’s Facebook and Instagram pages, from 9 January to 4 February 2018.

The Swiss Ice Hockey Cup Final 
The Swiss Ice Hockey Cup Final will be held on World Cancer Day, 4 February 2018, in Rapperswil or Ajoie. The event organisers will be use this outstanding sports event to help the fight against cancer by collecting donations from the attending public. All proceeds will be going to the Swiss Cancer League.

A Hockey Match with Veteran All Stars
The veteran Swiss hockey idols – Slava Bykov, David Aebischer, Kevin Lötscher, Patrice Brasey, Beni Plüss, to name a few – will face off in a charity hockey tournament on 3 February 2018 at 18:00, at the Tissot Arena Bienne/Biel. This all-star event was initiated by Tobias Lehmann, veteran HC Bienne hockey player, who was also affected by cancer. The proceeds from the evening shall be donated to the Jura Cancer League and the Bern Cancer League. 

In 2018, World Cancer Day will be another great occasion to get Switzerland moving!

7. The 'We Can, I Can' SCPN conference 2018

Join the SCPN on Monday 5th February for their 2018 conference, adopting the World Cancer Day theme of ‘We Can, I Can.’  Conference attendees will be presented with some of the latest evidence on risk factors associated with cancer and provide you with information on what is happening in Scotland to tackle the lifestyle factors which impact on cancer e.g. obesity, alcohol consumption, physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyles. The SCPN hope you will come away with inspiration for what they can do as clinicians, academics, policy makers and individuals.

The conference is held in the heart of Edinburgh at the Merchants Hall, Hanover Street, a light and spacious venue, within easy walking distance of transport links, good quality accommodation and hospitality.

8. Project PINK BLUE World Cancer Day 2018 events, Nigeria

Project PINK BLUE in collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health, U.S. Embassy in Nigeria, Transcorp Hilton Abuja and Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) have organised three events to commemorate World Cancer Day 2018 in Nigeria. The events range from a 5km Walk, free cancer screenings, fundraising, aerobics, 10km Ride, 50km Cycling, 21km run/ half marathon, dance against cancer, audio-visual awareness and exhibition.

Guest speakers will also attend the event including the former President of Nigeria Olusegun Obasanjo and Yakubu Gowon, the former head of state.

9. Family water fun day, Flores, Uruguay 

Lots of fun is to be had by the whole family at the municipal pool in the heart of Flores. Many aquatic activities will take place as well as competitions and much more. 

The aim of this event is to spread one of the important signs for change key messages "We Can. I Can. Create healthy cities."

10. 3rd Annual World Cancer Day Regina - Family FUNdraising and Awareness Event, Canada

Join the World Cancer Day Regina Planning Committee for the 3rd Annual Community event, World Cancer Day Regina! A Family FUNdraising and awareness event to help create a world without Cancer. 

You can register for this event for free and by providing a donation of $50 or more you will receive a FREE World Cancer Day toque! The event will take place on Saturday the 3rd of February and activities include information booths from local cancer groups, a ‘Stick it to Cancer’ Shinny Tournament, a free skate, World Cancer Day merchandise, a hair-cut for cancer, a 50-50 draw, a silent auction and more!  All proceeds go to the Saskatchewan Cancer Agency and the Canadian Cancer Society.
