A Journey Through Cancer Treatment: The Importance of Pre-Chemo Counseling for Prevent Infection
Neha had always been a vibrant and active woman. But when she was diagnosed with breast cancer, her world turned upside down. The news was a shock, but Neha was determined to fight back with all her strength. She knew the journey ahead would be tough, especially the chemotherapy sessions. However, she wasn't prepared for the potential complications that could arise due to infections and antimicrobial resistance.
Pre-Chemo Counseling
When Neha arrived at Tata Memorial Hospital for her first chemo session, she met Jyoti, the Nurse Manager. Jyoti explained the importance of pre-chemo counseling in reducing the risk of infections. She emphasised how crucial it was to follow a set of guidelines before, during, and after chemotherapy to ensure Neha’s safety and well-being.
"Neha, it’s essential to prepare your body for the chemotherapy. We want to minimise any chances of infection, especially considering the growing issue of antimicrobial resistance," Jyoti said kindly. "Stay away from crowded areas, always wear a clean mask. After chemo, if you develop a fever immediately inform the doctor."
Hydration and Hygiene
Jyoti began by advising Neha to drink plenty of water for three days before her chemotherapy sessions. "Staying hydrated will help flush out toxins and keep your body functioning smoothly," Jyoti explained.
She also stressed the importance of maintaining hygiene. "We need to ensure that you’re in a clean environment to prevent any infections. Make sure to wash your hands frequently and keep your living area spotless."
Meditation and Mental Health
Understanding the mental strain chemotherapy could bring, Jyoti recommended meditation. "Meditation can help reduce stress and anxiety. A calm mind can significantly improve your body’s ability to heal," she advised.
Managing Nausea
Anticipating the nausea that often accompanies chemotherapy, Jyoti suggested a simple remedy. "Whenever you feel nauseous, take a small piece of ginger with a pinch of salt. It’s a natural way to ease the discomfort."
Training Relatives
One of the critical aspects of Neha's pre-chemo counseling was training her relatives. Jyoti arranged a session with Ravi and Priya, Neha's relatives, who would be assisting Neha during her treatment.
"We need to make sure you both understand how to maintain a sterile environment," Jyoti instructed them. "You’ll need to help Neha with her gargles every four hours. This helps keep her throat clean and reduces the risk of infection."
She also taught them how to handle fruits and other food items. "Always soak fruits in a solution of potassium permanganate before giving them to Neha. This will help kill any harmful bacteria or fungi."
Jyoti’s Guidance
Throughout the chemotherapy sessions, Jyoti was a constant source of support and guidance for Neha. With her help, Neha managed to follow all the recommended practices diligently. Despite the challenges, she felt stronger knowing that she was doing everything possible to minimise the risks associated with her treatment.
Neha's journey through chemotherapy was arduous, but the pre-chemo counseling and infection control measures significantly reduced her risk of complications. With Jyoti’s support and the unwavering assistance of her relatives, Neha felt empowered to face her treatment head-on.
This story underscores the vital role of pre-chemo counseling in preventing infections, especially in the context of rising antimicrobial resistance. By following simple yet effective practices, cancer patients like Neha can improve their chances of a successful and smoother treatment experience.
