World Cancer Research Day 2023: diversity and inclusivity in cancer research

World Cancer Research Day supports greater diversity of populations in cancer research to prevent more cancers and improve survival rates and quality of life for everyone.

World Cancer Research Day on 24 September celebrates the power of partnerships. A collaborative research culture is essential to allow more people to be diagnosed earlier and treated more effectively, with a better quality of life at every stage.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • World Cancer Research Day (WCRD), celebrated on 24 September, aims to raise awareness about the importance of cancer research and was launched in 2016 with the World Cancer Declaration for Research on Cancer
  • From 2021-2024, WCRD focuses on equity in cancer research with the theme “Driving Progress Together.”
  • WCRD encourages public participation through signing the World Cancer Research Declaration, organising events, and sharing information via social media.

World Cancer Research Day (WCRD) is an international and multidisciplinary movement celebrated on 24 September and promoted by organisations and individuals around the world to highlight the essential value of cancer research to drive progress in cancer control.

WCRD was launched in 2016 with the World Cancer Declaration for Research on Cancer, to raise awareness and commitment for cancer research, improve the survival and quality of life of people living with cancer and reduce the global impact of this disease. The Declaration asks people to increase awareness and knowledge about the importance of cancer research, promote international collaboration, and encourage the development of the necessary infrastructure and funding.

Since 2021 and through to 2024, World Cancer Research Day is focused on improving equity in cancer research, providing greater access to research results for all, ensuring that scientific advances in the prevention, treatment and management of cancer benefit everyone, everywhere, and ultimately reducing disparities in cancer outcomes. The theme of the current campaign is: “Cancer Research Works: Driving Progress Together.”

WCRD encourages everyone to sign the World Cancer Research Declaration, organise and register an activity or event, however small, and follow and share on social media using campaign materials, or become a supporting organisation.

Advances in early cancer detection are not reaching everyone equally due to persistent barriers and stigma. In this interview, Stephanie Sinclair at Worldwide Cancer Research and Maja Surowicz at Fundacja Onkologiczna Rakiety in Poland, both UICC members, highlight the urgent need for equitable access and public trust.
