UICC opens call for applications for implementation research on cancer prevention in Europe

As of 15 December 2023, UICC is opening a call for applications to support implementation research in cancer prevention in Europe through collaborative grants of up to €500,000 each.

A series of discussions and workshops with European cancer organisations gave rise to the Reimagining Cancer Research in Europe initiative launched at the last World Cancer Congress in 2022 in Geneva. This initiative responds to the need identified for targeted investment in implementation science on cancer prevention. The initiative is aligned with, and supports the objectives of Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan and Europe’s Mission on Cancer.

“The figures coming at us in Europe are staggering. If we don’t step up our act in the effective prevention of cancer, our health systems will crumble under the burden. Coming together across Europe in the funding of often neglected research in an attempt to find new and innovative pathways to prevention is not only inspiring but also bitterly needed.”
– Johan van de Gronden, CEO, Dutch Cancer Society (KWF)

The Reimagining Cancer Research in Europe initiative is a partnership between UICC, the Dutch Cancer Society, the Swedish Cancer Society (Cancerfonden), the Danish Cancer Society and the International Agency for Research on Cancer, with the primary purpose of supporting collaborative European projects in this field.

The call for applications will be open for three months, with a submission deadline of 15 March 2024, with awards being made mid-2024.

Collaborative groups of between two and four principal investigators (PIs) located in Europe and/or its associated countries are encouraged to apply. To be eligible, at least one PI needs to be located in Denmark, the Netherlands or Sweden. It is envisaged that approximately four collaborative projects will be supported in total. The maximum duration of the projects is two years.

“UICC is delighted to be able to facilitate this initiative on behalf of its European members, supporting collaboration and shared learning across contexts and countries to help drive effective implementation of known evidence-based interventions, and harness the potential of cancer prevention to reduce the burden of cancer in this region.”
Dr Kirstie Graham, Director, Capacity Building, UICC

Advances in early cancer detection are not reaching everyone equally due to persistent barriers and stigma. In this interview, Stephanie Sinclair at Worldwide Cancer Research and Maja Surowicz at Fundacja Onkologiczna Rakiety in Poland, both UICC members, highlight the urgent need for equitable access and public trust.
