Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital (TMUCIH) was established in 1861 is the birthplace of oncology in China. It has a history of more than a hundred years and has become one of the most famous modernized cancer hospitals worldwide, with having one of the largest bases for cancer prevention, treatment, training and research in China. After new China was founded, it was named as "Tianjin Municipal People's Hospital" in 1950. Prof. Jin Xian-Zhai, the well-known oncologist, set up the first tumor ward in China in 1952. Since then the hospital has specialized in orthopedics and oncology. In 1972, the orthopedics department was moved to become a specialized orthopedics hospital and this hospital became a specialized cancer hospital with 341 beds. In 1977, the Institute of Cancer Research was established with 8 departments in it. Tianjin Medical University Cancer Institute and Hospital took on its modern features in 1996 and continues to provide high quality service to its patients. Since 1998, TMUCIH has been full UICC member.
