Virtual Dialogue: cancer screening, early detection and UHC

UICC hosted a Virtual Dialogue on 20 July 2023 that looks at why cancer detection and diagnosis services can be made accessible and affordable to everyone who needs them by inclusion in universal health benefits packages – and how this can be achieved.

The earlier cancer is diagnosed, the more likely it is to respond to effective treatment. This saves patients from more invasive or intensive treatments and enables care to be delivered at lower costs to families and health systems. The objectives of early detection and screening programmes are therefore closely aligned with the goals of universal health coverage (UHC) in helping improve people’s health and reduce their financial risks.

Early detection and screening programmes are the most effective tools the cancer community has to diagnose cancer early. As governments further develop UHC benefit packages, it is essential to ensure that these plans include appropriate activities to catch cancer cases early and inform patients about the importance of screening and early detection.

Plans must also support patients in accessing treatment and tackle financial and logistical barriers.

This Virtual Dialogue brought together a collection of experts to explore:

  • how different countries are working to improve equitable access to early detection and screening services;

  • what advice and guidance is available to advocates and decision-makers;

  • the role of civil society organisations in advocating for change and how organisations have been making the case for UHC.

Participants were invited to share their views and experiences, as well as pose questions to the experts directly.
