Virtual Dialogue: cancer treatment in UHC

UICC hosted a Virtual Dialogue on 27 July 2023 looking at why is it so important that UHC plans include a core package of cancer services, built around the needs of patients, and how different actors are working to achieve this.

Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality worldwide. The human and economic burden it places on individuals, communities and health systems is growing most quickly in low- and middle income countries. To tackle this it is critical to include essential cancer treatment services in national universal health coverage (UHC) benefits packages, structured in such a way to help to address, rather than replicate, health inequities.

Governments can meet this objective by including the voices of patients, communities and care providers in the process of prioritising and implementing multimodal cancer care – an approach that combines multiple treatment methods to manage the cancer and increase the effectiveness of treatment.

As countries continue to review and revise their UHC strategies, there is a clear and urgent need for coordinated civil society advocacy to push for the scale-up of cancer services and the sustainable and equitable investments that underpin this.

This Virtual Dialogue brought together a diverse group of experts to explore:

  • how different countries are working to progressively realise cancer care services nationally;

  • how organisations have been making the case for the inclusion of cancer treatment services in UHC benefit packages;

  • the role that civil society organisations can play in advocating for patient-centred services.
