4 February - World Cancer Day

More than ever before there is a need for a concerted and coordinated fight against cancer, and we believe that World Cancer Day can play its part by providing an even bigger platform for your cancer messages.

This is an exciting time: 2011 promises to be an important year with the UN Summit on Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) taking place in September.

Last year you shared fantastic feedback on your activities and how you used materials provided by UICC. We have taken this on board and developed our plans around your needs. You told us that for World Cancer Day 2011 you wanted us to showcase and support your efforts, and to achieve this we have developed a set of tools, including:

World Cancer Day Website: A global hub for UICC members and the media:

This year UICC has created a site dedicated to World Cancer Day. It features your activities on an interactive map and in the news feed. Whether you are launching a report, organising a fundraising event or advocacy activity, we want the world to know and encourage you to get online and share it!

The website incorporates:

  • An interactive map of events: to showcase your events and campaigns.
  • Resources:developed by prevention area with samples of the best campaigns from around the world to share and inspire members, media and the general public.
  • Prevention: information for the general public is available around key prevention principles.
  • A press area for members and the media: the website is an interactive platform for the global media push, making available all the necessary tools for you to develop your own press campaigns.
  • The World Cancer Declaration: the site encourages visitors to take action and sign the Declaration. Our ultimate goal is to gather 1 million signatures before the NCD Summit in September 2011.

Logo

UICC has developed a logo to establish a global identity for the day. In order to cement the day in calendars around the world, we hope that you will use this logo as part of your 2011 activities. The logo can be downloaded below in colour and black & white.

World Cancer Day Flyer

An easy to read brochure has been produced that can be distributed to the general public; it outlines all the major risk factors.

Global Media push

Following the success of 2010, we are continuing to keep a broad focus for 2011 so that you can tailor your activities to fit the needs of your organisation. This year’s messages will incorporate the following:

  • It’s World Cancer Day.
  • It’s a special year for cancer because of the UN NCD summit in September 2011.
  • Action: You can help the world by signing the World Cancer Declaration.
  • Cancer can be prevented: Protect yourself and your family, 30-40% of cancers can be potentially prevented.

World Cancer Day is your day – so tell us what your plans are for 4 February 2011 at communication@uicc.org.
