Header Paragraph

The 2014 UN NCD Review hearing, which took place on the 19th June, 2014 provided a significant opportunity for NGOs, civil society organisations, academic institutions and the private sector to review and assess the progress achieved in the prevention and control of NCDs since 2011.

Sally G Cowal, Senior Vice President for Global Programs of the American Cancer Society (ACS), gave a speech at the Opening Plenary of the hearing.

Cowal, a former delegate at the UN as a member of the US Mission and a founding member and Director for External Relations at the Joint UN Programme on HIV AIDS, stated that while there have been gains made in fighting NCDs, we are now confronted with "an existential reality."

"The gains we have achieved over the past decade could be wiped out and the investments we have made in successfully addressing HIV and other communicable diseases lost to a Tsunami of mortality and morbidity from cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes and respiratory diseases" said Cowal.

In her speeach, she also emphasised the fact that we cannot treat our way out of the epidemic, and must pair treatment efforts with prevention efforts.

UICC made a statement at the hearing about the importance of National Cancer Control Plans (NCCPs) and outlining UICC's colaborative project with the World Health Organization (WHO), US National Cancer Institute and others, to provide a web portal that collates all exisiting cancer plans and aims to share best practices and planning resources.

The UN NCD Review will be the second time ever NCDs have a standalone political meeting at the UN General Assembly and it will take place from 10-11th of July.
