We warmly welcomed in our offices two of our full members, Rethink Breast Cancer and the
Rwanda Palliative Care and Hospice Organisation, who took advantage of their trip to Geneva to meet with the UICC team and strengthen the collaboration. They had the opportunity to present their organisation to all UICC staff and to have side meetings with relevant teams to further discuss topics of common interest.

The co-founder of the Bricon Foundation Abigail Simon-Hart was recently presented with the Humanitarian of the Year 2017 at the Women4Africa Award Ceremony held in London on 20th May 2017 in recognition of work done with women with breast cancer and patients battling other forms of cancer .The Bricon Foundation funds patient treatment (including palliative care), provides free mastectomy products to indigent women who cannot afford to buy them and offers counselling services to patients and their families.

Wednesday, 14 June 2017 – The Norwegian Cancer Society (NCS), have launched a new campaign calling on other organisations to raise awareness and take action against the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) including antibiotic resistance, which could set cancer treatment back decades.
Inspired by the legislation of its Australian neighbors, New Zealand just adopted a robust new tobacco control decision on plain packaging.
QIMR Berghofer’s world-leading immunologist, Professor Rajiv Khanna, has been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list. Professor Khanna, who is the Coordinator of QIMR Berghofer’s Centre for Immunotherapy and Vaccine Development, is currently leading four world-first clinical trials using immunotherapy to treat cancers and other conditions.

Americas Amigas is a Brazilian Association which aims to engage, in the Brazilian territory, activities to fight breast cancer, mainly by providing early diagnosis. The association activities are based on 4 main programs to tackle breast cancer and give women from low-income population the opportunity to detect the disease in an early stage: donation of mammogram machines; training and education aimed at mammogram technicians and radiology physicians; donation of mammogram exams; and awareness campaigns throughout the year.
In eight years of activities, Americas Amigas has donated 23 mammography machines, eight digital mammography systems and one multi-care stereotactic table to public and philanthropic hospitals in different regions of Brazil. In addition to donating equipment, Americas Amigas also monitors and evaluates the performance of the beneficiaries. Over the past eight years, the equipment donated has provided over 600,000 mammogram exams.
Public Health England is the national public health agency for England. The organisation is part of the UK Government and formally an Executive Agency of the Department of Health. Although responsible for all areas of public health, PHE’s work on cancer includes - development, delivery and monitoring of cancer prevention, screening, environmental hazards vaccination, public awareness, and national cancer data collection through the National Cancer Registration and Analysis.
The Brazilian Society of Surgical Oncology (BSSO) is a non-profit medical entity, which brings together cancer surgeons in Brazil, being the largest society dedicated to Surgical Oncology in Latin America. BSSO works hard to improve cancer patient care through continuing education to its members, encouraging research and fostering best quality and ultimate techniques to assure the best outcomes in daily practice. We also collaborate closely with the cancer patients through awareness campaigns about prevention and early diagnosis. We are currently promoting the campaign on universal access to safe oncologic surgery with other partner societies. Access to health is a basic human right guaranteed by WHO and we believe that access to safe surgical oncology is essential and possible to be offered to all.
The Oman Cancer Association (OCA) is a non-governmental, non-for-profit umbrella organisation. The inception of the Association was in the 2000 but was registered at the Ministry of Social Development in 2004. OCA is the brainchild of a four times cancer survivor Ms. Yuthar AlRawahi who started the initiatives in 1999. Founded 17 years ago, The Oman Cancer Association serves the community to achieve its Vision, Mission and Objectives. This is done through special and landmark projects, fundraising and creating awareness towards all cancers. Concentrating on awareness, empowerment, human resource development and research, OCA collaborates and supports other similar organisation within the region and globally and offers breast screening services through a mobile mammography unit that goes round the country. All these services are offered free of charge and to all those who reside in Oman whether Omanis or otherwise. Oman is one of the co-founders of the International Cancer Prevention Consortium - ICPC with the objective for cancer prevention and control and concentrating in education, training and dedicated research. Through the ICPC Oman Cancer Association supports the low- and middle- income countries – LMIC in their needs to fight cancers in their countries. Oman has won a number of local, regional and UN awards for its landmark projects. The Oman Cancer Association Motto is: Repeated regular examination gives early diagnosis, better prognosis and cure. We believe that: Together We Can Make A Difference.
The Rwanda Palliative Care and Hospice Organisation (RPCHO) is part of the technical working group of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) at Rwanda Biomedical Center where the department of cancer is located. The organisation signed Memorandum of Understanding with the Rwanda Ministry of Health to advocate to reduce risk factors of cancer, prevention, treatment, palliative care and developing national cancer control plan. Working in a developing country, the organisation is advocating for pain control, palliative care and hospice by using different strategies, to influence States or private stakeholders to design, adopt, implement or change practices for quality life up to the end of life.
