Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the Executive Committee of ISSTD and the Hungarian organizers it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you all to the XVIth World Congress on Gestational Trophoblastic Diseases (GTDs) which will be held in Budapest, Hungary, November, 2011. The conference will focus on the latest developments and new findings in the biology, genetics, epigenetics, treatment and follow-up of the different groups of these diseases and their variants. The congress will provide an invaluable opportunity for experts of the region (for the first time in the European Continent) as well as those outside the region to share experiences and exchange scientific information. The knowledge and experience in the research, treatment and follow-up of gestational trophoblastic diseases accumulated over 35 years in the host country of the World Congress and in the surrounding parts of Europe should be of interest for ISSTD and invariably brings fruit for thoughts for all of us particularly as such approach is followed by many parts of the world. In addition, it brings tremendous stimulation in research and harmonizing local guidelines with the international ones by introducing the ISSTD expertise.

Based upon international experience we decided to establish a center for Hungarian trophoblast patients in our institution in Budapest in the middle of the 1970s. We enlarged and improved our knowledge continuously and initiated the latest methods of diagnosis and therapy. We established a tight co-operation with other clinics in Hungary and abroad and with academic centers. Our educational and publication activity made it possible for us to have had the opportunity to treat 80% of trophoblastic tumour patients from the 10.5 million population of Hungary. Along this line, it is not only a great honor for the country hosting the XVIth. Word Congres on GTDs, but unique opportunity improving care of women with these diseases.

The local organizing committee will make every effort to put together an exciting program and to continue the tradition of excellence set in previous world congresses of ISSTD And the congress will offer participants an opportunity to meet experts and colleagues from all corners of the globe. Getting together, learning together and enjoying friendship is a central value of our meeting.
