Celebrating Five Years of the NCD Alliance

Five years ago today, the NCD Alliance was officially launched at a side event at the World Health Assembly (WHA).

Header Paragraph

Since 2009, the NCD Alliance has come a long way. Founded by four international NGO federations – the International Diabetes Federation, the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease, the Union for International Cancer Control, and the World Heart Federationthe NCD Alliance now unites more than 2,000 civil society organisations in 170 countries, and convenes a network of 28 national and regional NCD alliances. It has established our reputation as a thought leader on NCD policy and practice, a convenor of civil society, a partner to governments and UN agencies, and an advocate for people at risk of or living with NCDs. By embracing the philosophy “together we are stronger,” the NCD Alliance has unequivocally demonstrated the value of working across diseases and risk factors for a common cause. And as a result, has contributed to the unstoppable momentum behind the global NCD agenda.

To mark their fifth anniversary, they have launched a new report: The NCD Alliance Report 2013-2014

The NCD Alliance Report 2013-2014 provides a snapshot of the many activities and achievements over the last year of the NCD Alliance and their extensive constituency– their network, partners, volunteers and staff. In many ways, this year has been a turning point for the NCD Alliance. They introduced new programmes, built new strategic partnerships, and have taken steps to strengthen their performance as an alliance.

Most notably, the NCD Alliance has increased their support for national action. While they remain committed to leading global advocacy on NCDs, they believe sustainable progress will only be achieved through local change agents and strong civil society coalitions at the national level. For this reason, this year they launched their first national civil society capacity building programme, pioneered civil society monitoring on government progress, expanded their network of national and regional NCD alliances, and cultivated regional and south-south cooperation. Working with their partners, the Alliance is already seeing results that can be used to drive change for people with NCDs around the world.
