Capacity-Building workshops

UICC recently ran a series of two-day workshops to provide training and technical support to low- and middle-income countries to assist them to use research to guide the development and evaluation of cancer prevention programmes.

Since 2007, 40,255 people from 39 countries have participated in UICC's cancer related beliefs and behaviours survey. This is the first survey to provide internationally comparable data on cancer risk behaviours, cancer diagnosis and screening and cancer related beliefs.

The last UICC Capacity Building Workshop of the series was held in Shenzhen, China, on August 17 - 18, 2010, at the Futian Shangri-La Hotel.

A group of 35 participants attended the workshop, presented by four faculty from different backgrounds:

  • Craig Sinclair (Victoria, Australia), Director, Cancer Prevention Centre - Cancer Council Victoria, Director, WHO Collaborative Centre for UV Radiation(Cancer Council Victoria)
  • Melanie Wakefield (Victoria, Australia), Director and NHMRC Principal Research Fellow - Centre for Behavioural Research in Cancer
  • Terry Slevin (Perth, Australia) Director, Cancer Council Western Australia
  • Sharon Campbell (Waterloo, Canada) Senior Scientist, Centre for Behavioural Research and Program Evaluation, University of Waterloo

After the workshop, the selected participants were be able to:

  • identify, access, interpret and apply research to plan and implement public health communication programs for cancer prevention
  • apply principles and practical tools to develop and implement public health communication programs for cancer prevention
  • evaluate and continuously improve public health communication programs for cancer prevention

  • 24-26 August 2009: Istanbul, Turkey
  • 2-4 November 2009: Singapore
  • 22-24 March 2010: Cape Town, South Africa
  • 17-18 August (prior to the 21st World Cancer Congress): China
