V Forum of the Movement Against Cancer
The “Movement against Cancer” is a NGO embracing oncological patients, their relatives, oncologists and other medical specialists.
We have created a network of participants and supporters embracing 15 Russian regions. It is the only NGO in Russia exercising system approach (not case-by-case charity) to solving specific problems of oncological patients at federal and interregional level.
Yearly Fora of the Movement Against Cancer are timed to the World Cancer Day.
Cancer is one of the three principal causes of mortality in Russia. Every year, almost 300 thousand people die from cancer in our country; 150 thousand more become disabled persons. Five-year probability of survival of the oncological patients in Russia is less than 43%. This is the lowest rate in Europe. More than 500 thousand new cases of cancer are revealed every year, and their number is bound to grow following the oncoming ageing of the population.
We bring unresolved problems to attention of the powers-that-be using different tools:
• public appeals;
• collecting signatures;
• face-to-face meetings;
• media campaign, etc.
We bring cases of infringing upon the oncological patients’ rights to the attention of Roszdravnadzor – the reviewing authority of the Russian Health and Social Care Ministry. We see to it that justice is restored – patients turning to the Movement for help get it.
The Movement enjoys active support on behalf of leading Russian oncologists. Our initiatives, brought to attention of the President, government, legislative bodies and regional authorities, have been noticed.
We realize there is much more to do. So we try to make every Forum of our Movement a public event designed to attract broad attention and to have positive consequences for cancer patients in Russia.
