Summary of the 69th UNGA High Level Week

Header Paragraph

The high-level week of the 69th UN General Assembly was a very active and productive week for the NCD Alliance and members of their network, with several successful events, the launch of a new policy brief on UHC and NCDs, and a very exciting announcement for 2015.

Highlights include:

  • A side event on Sunday 21 September hosted by the NCD Alliance, A Healthy Future for All: Investing in early years for NCDs and Post-2015. Discussions focused on the best practices and proven successes that result from investing in early lifecourse interventions to reduce NCD risk and improve health outcomes. • A high-level ministerial roundtable on the next steps for integrating NCDs and health in post-2015, held in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Denmark and the Permanent Missions of CARICOM to the UN. Highlights from this discussion are forthcoming.
  • A health in post-2015 NGO advocacy strategy meeting, held in collaboration with the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, the Global Health Council, and the UN Foundation. The meeting, attended by over 50 people from various health-related NGOs, proved useful in summarizing the past year of advocacy, and areas for attention and action in coming months. A summary of this meeting, and next steps, are forthcoming.

On Tuesday 23 September, the NCD Alliance announced the Global NCD alliance Forum, the first meeting of national and regional alliances ever, to be held in November 2015 in Sharjah UAE. Click here to read the full announcement.

Updates on Global Coordination Mechanism

WHO has published two information notes on the new Global Coordination Mechanism for NCDs (GCM/NCD) website; an information note on participants and an information note on working groups.

The information note on participants stipulates that the GCM Secretariat will continue its ongoing work to establish eligibility criteria for the involvement of non-state actors (NSAs); conduct an open-ended call for interest (pre-registration) for participation of NSAs; and conduct screening of interested NSAs to ensure they are committed to the responsibilities of GCM.

The information note on working groups states that a roster of NCD experts will be established through MS nominations via WHO Regional Directors (by 15 November), to be followed by the selection and appointment by the WHO Director General (by 15 December).
