Rehabilitation of the Paediatric Onocology Unit

The project focuses on the rehabilitation of the 24 year old paediatric oncology unit of the Treichville University Hospital to improve the condition of children patients and their families.

The paediatric oncology unit has been in existence for 24 years. It remains the only unit in the country with a capacity of 16 beds for a population of 18 million inhabitants that has a cancer incidence in the under 15 age group (48% of the population) of 37.6/100,000. The military coup and political crisis which lasted 7 years greatly reduced services (70% of users). Ignorance of cancer contributes to late consultations (40%), the personnel is overworked and the infrastructure is growing old which leads to poor motivation. The consequence are high mortality rates (39%) and poor rates of remission (28%).

Main Objectives of the Project

  • Improving Hospitalization Conditions
  • Installing access to water in the wards
  • Renovating joinery, electricity, plumbing, painting
  • Provisioning of medical devices and non-medical equipment
  • Repair and equip a play room
  • Renovate a relaxation area for parents (kitchen, detergent)
  • Improving the work conditions of the personnel (treatment and rest areas)
  • Staff training via financing a course in France, The Maghreb
  • Prevent nosocomial infections (two sterile rooms)
  • Assume responsibility for patients and families with great need
