Improving care and social support for children with cancer

Situation Before 2005

  • No organization of paediatric oncology in Mali
  • No treatment protocols
  • Children were only managed by surgeons and oncologists for adults
  • No drugs for chemotherapy

Main Objectives of the Project

  • To arrange an equip a paediatric oncology unit in Bamako
  • To train qualified personnel in the management of childhood cancer
  • To support the ancillary medical personnel
  • To subsidize complementary examinations for very needy patients
  • To subsidize very needy patients during the period of hospitalization
  • To sensitize the population towards improving early diagnosis

Benefits of the Project

  • Unit renovated and equipped with nine beds, work conditions are improved
  • 251 children treated in two years
  • 35 cases managed entirely
  • Public awareness campaigns now lead to more patients being diagnosed at an early stage
