Improving Cancer Education (ICE)

The major goal driving this proposal is to train clinic workers in Botswana to recognize early signs and symptoms of cancer, understand treatment and its side effects and be able to assist with terminal care for those affected by cancer.

This 6 month proposal will involve 8 health districts including 3 major cities in Botswana involving a total of 464 clinics workers.  Three specific aims are associated with the major goal:

Aim 1:Work collaboratively with the students from the Institute of Health Science (IHS), this project aims to build capacity among young professionals, introduce them to team work with governmental and non-governmental organisations, and set the stage for further collaboration among CAB and HIS

Aim 2: To develop a bi-lingual (Setswana and English) Training Manual.  This will include input from all partners, in addition to clinic workers and patient feedback.  This Manual will be used as reference to train future nurses by either incorporating it in health sciences curricula or in seminars and workshops; and

Aim 3: To be able to reach areas outside Gaborone to:
a) promote the exchange of information, support and collaboration of professionals trained in oncology,
b) set standards to serve clients and families better, and
c) work together towards improving opportunities for continuing education.

Organisation
The Cancer Association of Botswana coordinates several programs for the fight against cancer.
CAB promotes prevention and health promotion through talks, conferences, campaigns and the distribution of brochures and posters throughout the country. Through Tshiamo House (the Interim Care Home) temporary accommodation, medical care, and meals are provided to patients while they are receiving treatment at Princess Marina and Gaborone Private Hospital. Cancer Association of Botswana also provides transportation for patients to go to the hospitals for treatment. CAB offers free confidential counseling to patients, family and friends. After-care is also offered to patients upon returning to their respective homes through follow up telephone calls and home visits. Reach for Recovery: CAB has a group of survivors who visit cancer patients at their homes and provide them with emotional and spiritual support.
