Establishment of Surveillance System for Childhood Cancer in Cali, Columbia
Cancer is a major public health concern and priority for the Columbian government. The Columbian Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Association has stated that cancer is the second cause of death among children 5 to 15 years of age. In order to understand the incidence and impact of cancer in Columbia, an information system will be developed in order to provide a clearer picture of the phenomena. An information system would also provide policy makers, clinical managers, and health care workers the necessary information to make decisions about the care of children with cancer and improve treatment results.
Main Objective of the Project
- Establish and maintain an epidemiological surveillance system of childhood cancer in Cali, Colombia
Specific objectives of the project
- Characterization of all tumors diagnosed in the city in children, including incidence and mortality rates
- Detailed follow-up for children with hematopyetical and lymphoid neoplasms
