Education of Patients, Families, Society and Promotion of Paediatric Oncology Care and Support

The focus of the project is to raising awareness in the community and the healthcare professional in order to improve the diagnosis and the treatment of a potentially curable disease.

In Egypt, cancer is advancing within healthcare priorities as mortality rates due to acute illnesses are reducing. Cancer in children is affected by stigma and lack of information which impact on curability and quality of life. Raising awareness and educating children, their families, the healthcare team and the community at large has a definite impact on the improvement of management of a potentially curable disease.

Main Objectives of the Project:

  • Education of patient, their families, healthcare team and community
  • Addressing the stigma surrounding cancer
  • Producing audio-visual (AV) material for multimedia presentation and adaptation for use in communities with limited resources
  • Pre-and post audience evaluation to tailor messages
  • Use and share the paediatric cancer AV concept as a model for adult cancers, specific issues such as palliative therapy or other disease areas

Benefits of the Project:

  • Children with cancer benefit from seeing their problem being presented by community celebrities (a famous national actor)
  • Improved compliance to treatment and reduced psychological trauma due to increased understanding of cancer
  • Improved diagnosis and referral rates
  • Improved awareness in the community has led to a change in general perception of the disease. It has permitted earlier diagnosis, an improved utilization of limited financial resources as well as improvement in disease outcomes
