Childhood Tumour Registry

Due to resource restrictions, Karachi Cancer Registry has faced and immense limitation in terms of the services it can provide. The project aims to cover the entire city of Karachi for data collection and adequate referral systems.

A rising cancer incidence has been reported by the Karachi Cancer Registry over the last decade and a half for all cancer types and age groups.  The incidence of childhood cancers is also high compared to the other countries of the region.  Karachi South is a high staged, high risk region for many childhood tumors, including lymphoma, retinoblastoma, and soft tissue sarcomas.  The prognosis is bleak and it is unclear whether the data for Karachi South is generalizable to the city of Karachi.

Even patients with cancers that have an optimistic prognosis in terms of cures and remission reach health care centers with advanced stage of disease in Karachi South.  A contributory factor is also the substantial mismanagement and time lost between diagnosis and treatment, due to the lack of referral system in the country.

Due to resource restrictions, Karachi Cancer Registry has faced and immense limitation in terms of the services it can provide.  The registry has been unable to cover the entire city of Karachi for data collection and has been unable to provide adequate referral systems.

Main Objectives of the Project:

  • Provide reliable cancer incidence and survival data for a sample population of the country (Karachi South)
  • Help guide the detected cancer patients to better treatment, care, and support
  • Train health care personnel in cancer management and cancer registration
  • Provide the incidence data for the planning and assessment of the cancer control program, for health education and cancer related etiological research

Benefits of the Project:

  • Improved data collection of childhood cancers
  • Extended data collection to the entire city of Karachi
  • Early detection training for health care professionals
  • Contribute to improved and more efficient access to treatment and support through the implementation of a referral service
