Astellas joined our family of Vanguards in 2014 with the clear ambition to help the cancer community achieve higher standards of health and transform the outlook for cancer patients, as stated by Mr Yoshihiko Hatanaka, Chairmand and CEO of the company: “At Astellas we are actively engaged in resolving global health issues. There are unique opportunities to influence the inclusion of cancer-related targets and indicators in the post 2015 development agenda which will impact directly the way the disease is treated and prevented; there has never been a more tangible and immediate opportunity to affect change.”
The French Cancer League against cancer counts among the most influential UICC members, and has largely contributed to the development of the national cancer plans launched by the French Government since 2009. The League has been engaged in our education and training programmes for years, and has supported the expansion of UICC’s membership in francophone Africa. The League will host the World Cancer Congress in 2016 in Paris.
Accuray enjoys a niche market profile among the radiation oncology companies as they provide state-of-the-art high-tech solutions for the treatment of cancer and other diseases. Accuray partnered with UICC in 2014. Our common endeavours contribute to dispel the existing cancer myths and misconceptions to combat the inability to treat the disease effectively around the world. Accuray is also an active member of the Global Task Force on Radiotherapy for Cancer Control.
The Friends of Cancer Patients are a prominent UICC Patron and a leading member in the United Arab Emirates as well as in the international arena. Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Royal Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society, is the prestigious International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for UICC and the International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC and the NCD Alliance. Her Highness and the Friends of Cancer Patients will host the first ever Global NCD Alliance Forum which will take place in November 2015 in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.
UICC has worked with Bupa since 2012. Bupa’s purpose is to help people lead “longer, healthier, happier lives”. This context has enabled us to establish a shared ambition to improve wellness at work. In 2014 and 2015, we produced seven reports or toolkits ‘Cancer – It’s everyone’s business’, ‘Less Smoking Better Business’, ‘Tackling Breast Cancer in the workplace’, ‘Investing in the Health of Women at Work’, ‘Growing the value of workplace cancer initiatives’, ‘A practical approach to building a successful workplace cancer initiative’ and ‘Working with Cancer’ to raise awareness of cancer prevention and early detection among the employees of global companies, and ultimately help reduce the number of new cancer cases in the future. It gives decision-makers concrete tools and ideas to help implement workplace cancer initiatives.
