Partnering with the Private Sector

Roche

Roche

Roche and UICC have been working in partnership since 2008. In 2010, Roche made a leadership investment, becoming an early patron of the Together We Are Stronger campaign. Thanks to this, and the support of our other leading partners, UICC has been able to ramp up the support provided to its members around the world and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment through World Cancer Day – a unique global campaign with a media ‘potential to see’ reach of four billion people each year.

Most recently, Roche has further increased their commitment to the global cancer community by pledging significant additional programme-specific funds to UICC’s Global Initiative for Cancer Registries (GICR). GICR is a multi-partner programme aiming to improve cancer data collection in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) delivered in partnership with International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), WHO, Harvard Global Equity Initiative and others. The success of the GICR programme will lead to an increase in the number and quality of cancer registries, and ultimately to national cancer control interventions guided by reliable data.

Cary Adams, CEO of UICC, visited Roche’s headquarters in Basel in 2012 to talk with over 80 staff on the work of UICC and the importance of Roche’s role. Roche has utilised World Cancer Day on February 4th over the past number of years to engage and inform its global staff of 80,000 on cancer issues.

Varian Medical SystemsVarian Medical Systems

Varian is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies, with specific expertise in radiotherapy. Two years ago, Varian became a Vanguard Champion of UICC’s priority work. Since then, Varian and UICC have collaborated in areas which are important for both our organisations and Varian pledged additional project-specific funds for advocacy in 2011.

Together with our members and partners, Varian helps UICC ensure radiotherapy receives appropriate attention as part of a multidisciplinary approach to cancer treatment, for example Varian executives have joined UICC at key meetings to help present the case for radiotherapy, including a private Minister of Health breakfast meeting at the World Cancer Congress in Montréal, Canada in 2012.

UICC has also provided input and advice on important Varian initiatives. “UICC has been very good to work with and we share a mission to provide better cancer care, training, and education in developing countries that currently do not have sufficient access to such necessities,” says Andy Whitman, Varian’s Vice-President of Government Affairs. “Partnering with a global cancer fighting organisation such as UICC helps enormously to achieve our goal of helping to save an additional 100,000 lives each year.”
