World Cancer Day 2014 - We all joined forces to 'Debunk cancer myths'

Find out what where the results from World Cancer Day 2014 - we share some of the topline figures that has confirmed that World Cancer Day 2014 was bigger and better than ever!

Thank you for your support! We look forward to keep working with you this year and in future World Cancer Day campaigns.

World Cancer Day 2014 focused on Target 5 of the World Cancer Declaration Reduce stigma and dispel myths about cancer, under the tagline “Debunk the myths”. There are still so many myths about the disease out there that this Day was the perfect opportunity for our members and the general public to dispel them. Greater awareness and education about cancer can lead to positive change at an individual, community and policy level and across the continuum of cancer care.

World Cancer Day has become a not-to-be-missed occasion to put cancer on the global agenda as a life-threatening disease for future generations.

The 2014 campaign has definitely surpassed our expectations in terms of impact and success, which we can only attribute to the global efforts of so many. What a major step-up from previous years through the great response we had from members and the public all over the globe. Together, for the second year in a row, we all joined forces to dispel some of the most damaging myths and misconceptions surrounding cancer.

All your efforts have helped to make World Cancer Day a globally and uniquely recognised event. We were very thrilled to observe the active participation of our members to mark this day. There was a wide variety of activities that took place globally such as tweetchats, photography campaigns, social media and global awareness campaigns, lighting of national monuments in blue and orange, videoconferences, roundtables, dancing ball, healthy cooking classes and even the creation of a new cancer society! There were also high-level meetings, national and local campaigns, and many regionally adapted press releases. This represents a very small sample of all the actions that were taken on World Cancer Day 2014, but still, showcases the large variety of ways that members got involved in the cause.

You, our member organisations, have all contributed to shape cancer control on a global scale and help UICC gain more influence as the leading cancer fighting membership organisation worldwide.

The success of the campaign has been measured thanks to the:

  • High number of hits on (12 million hits from 130,000 unique visitors who accessed the website so a 50% increase compared to 2013).
  • An incredible presence on social media, particularly on Twitter with the #WorldCancerDay (110,000 tweets using the World Cancer Day hashtag).
  • A total of 366 million impressions was gathered on all social media platforms.
  • Extremely impressive press and media coverage.

We especially would like to thank our members the Dutch Cancer Society, the King Hussein Cancer Foundation and the World Cancer Research Fund International for their financial support of the 2014 World Cancer Day campaign.
