Membership Survey 2013: Working with members

This year was marked by a milestone for Membership: the 2013 Survey. UICC undertook this exercise to better understand how we can serve you, our members – and your needs and expectations.

We received an overwhelming number of responses. Out of the 792 organisations invited to take part, a total of 312 completed surveys– giving us a strong response rate of 39% (well above the industry standard). All segments of our membership and all regions of the world were widely represented which make the results even more valuable. This is a testament of your commitment and we couldn’t be more thankful. These responses provide us with the basis for targeted actions in the next two years.

We were particularly pleased that the UICC ‘Purpose Statement’ is very strongly supported by our membership base. We are happy to know that we can all stand together behind this powerful statement:.

“We unite the cancer community to reduce the global cancer burden, to promote greater equity and to integrate cancer control into the world health and development agenda.”

In the next two years, UICC will keep working to keep this statement alive through you, the community that plays such a fundamental role in working towards achieving it.

In particular, we thank you for supporting our global work in our programme activities, convening actions and advocacy efforts. Many of you showed a great interest in the World Cancer Day campaign and we are looking forward to your continued support on 4 February 2014.

The information that you provided in the survey will also help us in addressing your concerns, particularly in the area of promoting your activities and communicating with you.

We presented the results to our Board of Directors in November and we are happy to tell you that the membership plan for the next two years will take into account the results of the 2013 Membership Survey. The General Assembly, to be held on 2 December 2014, will be the perfect opportunity to present progress on the suggestions you made.

Additionally, in the next few months you can expect to hear from us with invitations to join the follow-up working groups. 259 respondents expressed interest in participating in focus groups to deepen the understanding of the information received from UICC and how to better target it. Topics of the focus groups will range from how to best work with UICC, to what training and education tools are available for members and how to make the best use of them.

On behalf of the whole of UICC, its Board of Directors and its staff, I thank each one of you for your responses. There are great things to come and we look forward to working with you next year. As in 2013, let’s make 2014 a remarkable and even better year.
