UICC Board of Directors and UICC President-Elect will be elected by the General Assembly on 26 August 2012
The Board of Directors shall govern UICC in accordance with its objectives. It is empowered to provide leadership and strategic direction for all UICC activities.
General criteria for the Board of Directors
Nominees should have a Global Perspective towards cancer control and prevention; ready to participate at the leading global fora such as the United Nations, World Health Organization and World Economic Forum. Nominees should have experience in working with their own member state’s senior politicians. They should be comfortable working in global initiatives and in partnership with other organisations in the health field, private sector and cancer organisations.
Nominees should possess a firm understanding of the scope, work and mission of UICC. They must have a vision with regard to cancer control that goes beyond national boundaries and an understanding of the key global challenges.
Nominees must be willing and able to contribute positively to the decision-making process of the UICC Board and Board Committees on which they have agreed to serve. They must have demonstrated their ability to act within a team setting and be compelling enough to instil motivation in others.
Nominees must have a reputation for integrity, honesty and adherence to high ethical standards. They must be culturally sensitive and must reflect the international nature of UICC. The Board of Directors should be gender balanced. The Board’s working language is English.
Members of the Board should commit to fostering contact with cancer societies and other health-related organisations in their region and agree to help recruit new UICC members. They should also commit to secure expertise and resources when required.
Members of the Board of Directors should be committed to attend at least two face-to-face Board meetings per year. They are expected to receive full financial support from their organisations to cover their travel expenses to and from Board meetings. On an exceptional basis, UICC will cover these costs for Board Members who have not access to organisational support.

President Elect
The President-Elect is elected by the General Assembly for a two year term. At the end of his/her term, the President-Elect becomes the President. The main objective of the two year term as President-Elect is to prepare to take over the Presidency.
Specific criteria for the UICC President-Elect
In addition to the above-mentioned criteria for the Board of Directors, the President-Elect is expected to demonstrate the following capacities;
- Is a proven leader with a global vision
- Has capacity as a team builder
- Is highly regarded among peers
- Has a record of distinguished achievement with past/current national and international activities in the cancer field and/or exceptional future promise in fields that are relevant to UICC
- Is familiar with UICC and will serve and represent its best interests
- Demonstrates ability and willingness to engage in the strategic work of UICC
- Has expressed ability to commit substantial time for the job
- Has demonstrated the ability to play a substantive role vis-à-vis policymakers and leading political actors; to ensure cancer is continuously prioritised on the global agenda
- Is connected to cancer networks/institutions, governmental and non-governmental organisations, academic communities, etc. that will benefit the work and impact of UICC's activities
- Has access to resources and demonstrates willingness to open doors and raise funds for UICC.
- Has experience in leading major international events
- Benefits from a supportive infrastructure, preferably within a member organisation
- Has expressed strong interest and is willing to serve as President-Elect if so nominated and elected
