Shizuoka Cancer Center was established in 2002 and was followed by Research Institute in 2005. It is one of the finest cancer treatment facilities in the country. The center boasts the latest diagnostic and treatment equipment and treatment methods, including positron emission tomography (PET), proton beam therapy equipment and immunotherapy. It will open a research institute in 2005 to specialize in clinical applications for more advanced, specialized clinical care. While the Shizuoka Cancer Center is an R&D center, it is also a patient-centered facility with an excellent reputation for treatment. Its philosophy includes a commitment to providing full support not only to its patients, but their families too. Dr Kitagawa, member of UICC Board, says: " Shizuoka Cancer Center has been very famous for the very modern facilities and systems and also for the positive attitude to work for cancer prevention and cancer survivors". Shizuoka Cancer Center was admitted as a full-member of UICC in March 2007.
