Indonesian Center for Expertise in Retinoblastoma (ICER)
In Indonesia, Pediatric (Eye) oncology teams have been formed mostly in academic hospital. ICER consist of a group of multidisciplinary experts (ophthalmologists, pathologists, pediatric oncologists, radiologists, radiotherapists) in retinoblastoma at Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital, Jakarta. As an academic a well as a top referral hospital in Indonesia, Dr Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital play a role in teaching, patients care , community care and research activities.
The Indonesian Centre of Expertise in Retinoblastoma (ICER) has been founded in 2005 supported by Dutch Cancer Foundation funding for the development of a data base and exchange of medical specialists from Indonesia to the Netherlands (ophthalmologists, pathologist, pediatric oncologist, radiologist, radiotherapist) within the KWF-Asia project 2005-2008. The project focuses on 4 topics:
1. Adequate classification and staging of extra-ocular retinoblastoma.
2. Development of guidelines for treatment of extra-ocular retinoblastoma.
3. Increase early referral via the primary health care system and reduce treatment delay in Jakarta.
4. Exchange of medical specialists involved in retinoblastoma treatment in Indonesia and the Netherlands.
Early diagnosis is one of the program, and an education campaign in retinoblastoma was started since mid of year 2005 in Jakarta in conjunction with CBCC/KWFprogram, and in collaboration with YOAI,YKI Jakarta and the local health care providers (Dinas Kesehatan DKI Jaya). The campaign covered 142 Puskemas/PKK in 5 areas of Jakarta, and resulted in increasing the number of cases referred to Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (about 30% within 1 year period), and in increasing early diagnosis of several young children
ICER became associate UICC member in August, 2008.
